Northern California Striped Bass Fishing Report 4/20/23 “Go get your minnow….”

….buckets and knock the dust off them. It’s done been time to catch spring striped bass. With both the Sacramento River, and Feather River having an abundance of water. The spring striped bass have moved up both river systems. Fishing charter services like Ryan Tripp’s Guide Service, RH Guide Service, and Robert Petty’s Guide Service, have all spent time bouncing back and forth between the Sac and the Feather. Keeping clients on the best fishing opportunities possible. While other striped bass fishing charters like Mike’s Guide Service, and Dakota Townley’s Guide Service have stuck with just the Sacramento River, come hell or high muddy water.

Chasing the hot striped bass bite requires constant communication with other anglers. Using your resources will enable you to stay in front of the larger majority of schoolie stripers. Especially during wet winter years such as this one. When Northern California river waters are abundant, and the stripers are spread out over a great deal of the north state’s rivers. Communication with anglers fishing different areas will keep you in the now. Striped Bass are constantly on the move, and actually never stop swimming. They can be in your pocket one day, and in a different county the next day. Making it hard to consistently stay on the hot bite.

The Feather River out of the greater Yuba City area has been the most consistent striper fishery so far this season. Clearing up much faster then the Sacramento River, the Feather River tends to be the best fishing on high water years. Similar to the one we are experiencing this year. Fishing guide Scott Feist has only spent a single day on Sacramento River so far this season. Choosing to fish his customers on the more clear Feather River. More suitable for his preferred method of take. Trolling live minnows. Raith Herryford (RH Guide Service) along with striped bass fishing guide Ryan Tripp have both bounced back and fourth between the two river systems as needed to suit their styles of striper fishing. Casting plastics! The on again, off again, Sacramento River has been relatively quiet this past week. Fishing guides Dakota Townley John Klar, and SalmonSacRiver’s Mike Rasmussen are among the very few striper guides that have stuck it out on the dirty Sacramento. Providing the weather stays sunny and dry the Sacramento River should be back in action for the annual NorCal Guides and Sportsmans Association striper derby (4/22/23 - 4/23/23).

For the recreational angler looking to go get after some striped bass. Your time would be best spent fishing the Feather River out of Yuba City. You just can’t go wrong trolling live minnows around the Feather River right now. The stripers are there, and the water conditions are primo. Yes there is excessive boat traffic but as I mentioned the stripers are there.
